Iran waarschijnlijk betrokken bij liquidaties in Nederland

De AIVD heeft sterke aanwijzingen dat Iran betrokken is geweest bij de liquidaties van twee Nederlanders van Iraanse komaf in Almere in 2015 en Den Haag in 2017. Beiden waren tegenstanders van het Iraanse regime.

Alert blijven

Minister Ollongren: "Dit is ontoelaatbaar. Het toont aan dat onze diensten continu alert moeten blijven om dit soort buitenlandse activiteiten in kaart te brengen. Inlichtingen van de AIVD hebben er dan ook mede toe geleid dat stevige diplomatieke maatregelen door Nederland en de Europese Unie zijn genomen."

Onderzoek naar Iran

“De betrokkenheid van Iran bij de liquidaties onderstreept het belang van ons onderzoek naar de intenties van het Iraans regime”, aldus Dick Schoof (directeur-generaal AIVD).

Iran heeft belangstelling voor personen en organisaties die te boek staan als tegenstander van het huidige regime.

Het is gebleken dat indirect personen worden gebruikt voor acties in het buitenland. Meer over de handelswijze van Iran kan in het belang van het inlichtingenonderzoek niet openbaar worden gedeeld.

Samenwerking

Iran is niet alleen in Nederland actief. Schoof: “We werken intensief samen met buitenlandse collega’s om een beeld te krijgen van Iraanse inmenging in Europa."

The AIVD has strong indications of Iran’s involvement in the assassinations of two Dutch nationals of Iranian origins in Almere (2015) and The Hague (2017). Both men had been opponents of the Iranian regime.

Remain vigilant

Minister Ollongren: "Transgressions such as these cannot be tolerated. They show that our services must remain vigilant at all times and continue to uncover foreign activities of this kind. AIVD intelligence has contributed to the fact that the Netherlands and the European Union have taken severe diplomatic measures."

Ongoing investigation

"Iran's involvement in the assassinations underlines the importance of our investigation of the Iranian regime's intentions," says Dick Schoof, director general of the Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD).

Iran is interested in individuals and organisations that are known to be opponents of the current regime.

It was found that middlemen are used for operations on foreign soil. In the interest of the ongoing intelligence investigation, further details about Iran's modus operandi cannot be made public.
